Lewis Carroll

People’s Edition

1962

Through the Looking-Glass and What Alice Found There by Lewis Carroll is for sale.  This is the very attractive Through the Looking Glass People’s Edition book from 1962 and has the original John Tenniel Alice illustrations that have been colourised. The Lewis Carroll Through the Looking Glass original green boards bears an attractive illustration of Alice and the Mad Hatter to the front board, and an illustration of the Mad Hatter to the spine.

The binding is in Very Good condition with fading to the spine and partially to the plain back board, and with marks to the back board.

There are 232 numbered pages with the printed ‘An Easter Greeting To Every Child Who Loves Alice’ to the end of the book from Lewis Carroll and is dated Easter 1876.

This book has the most attractive illustrated front endpapers and rear endpapers for any children’s illustrated book that you are likely to find. These are large colour illustrations from the Lewis Carroll Through the Looking Glass children’s story.

There are 16 full page colour Alice illustrations by John Tenniel, which is correct as per the list to the front of the book.

The frontispiece has a wonderful illustration of Alice reaching upto Humpty Dumpty on the Wall.

Since this is a children’s illustrated book there are some minor scribbling and faults that we wish to bring to your attention, but these are minor and do not detract too much from the aesthetic quality of this book which are: an inscription to one of the blank pages after the front endpapers with a small crayon scribble; a small scribble to the Half Title Page; very small corners removed from pages 5/6, 7/8 and 9/10 without any loss to text; scribbling to text page 13; very small corner losses to the text pages of 71/72, 73/74, 79/80, 83,84; very light crayon line to the margin of the plate opposite page 98 (not affecting the image and this line is very feint); very small corner loss to text pages 159/160 and 187/188; and very small corner loss to the rear endpaper.

The pages range from being Good to Near Fine with some very light and occasional foxing to a minority of the pages, but with the vast majority of the pages being in exceptionally clean and attractive condition (Please see the images below).
